purgation
PURGATION is a collection wholly defined as a catharsis for Lukhanyo Mdingi; a body of work symbolic of the purification of suppressed emotions, and subsequent refuge into the dawning light of a new chapter.
This collection marks the label’s passage into print creation, and a deepening of Lukhanyo Mdingi’s dedication towards design that is attentive and aware. Artisanal tapestries act as the tactile substance of the collection’s garments, while standing as a poignant metaphor for the necessity of plurality among human-beings and cultures across the planet.
Employing indigenous African iconography and print-work, three distinctly personal textiles are composed together with techniques of pleating and tailoring. In honouring a nostalgia and respect for African sartorial narratives, PURGATION arose with an imperative sensitivity towards centering African design as a method for protecting identities and challenging censored consciousness.
